ABOUT ME

Lesson 1:

Rosebud Reservation background
and mini webquest

As a group:

  • Google up "Rosebud reservation" and see if your first option is http://www.rosebudsiouxtribe-nsn.gov/. If so, go to the Demographics page. Look at the page's address. Is this probably a reputable page? Why or why not?

  • Highlight it, press "ctrl + C," open a Word document, and press "ctrl + V" to paste the info into a Word document. As I read, use the highlight tool to emphasize important points.

Individually:

  • What is today's temperature on the Rosebud Reservation?

  • Watch the video on the Demographics page (http://www.rosebudsiouxtribe-nsn.gov/demographics/index.htm). Write ten last names of Lakota leaders.

  • From the Programs page, list five last names that include animals.

  • On the Education page, visit the St. Francis Indian School link (http://www.sfisk12.org/). Write the current month, in Lakota. Give its English description, as well.

  • Click here to submit your answers.

  • Discuss survey answers as a group.

Lesson 2

and
The Dance House
Introduction

  • Watch Joseph Marshall III's "Interview."

  • Read Introduction in The Dance House.

Lesson 3:

Oliver's Silver Dollar
Part I

  • Watch Oliver's Silver Dollar video teaser.

  • Pre-reading blog on what the story may be about, based on the video.  Type answers in Word first and save often, then post on blog as a comment.  Include only your initials as identifying information.

  • Look through each other’s blog comments.  Do you like someone else’s idea better than yours?  Why or why not?  Comment on the blog.

  • Begin reading Oliver's Silver Dollar as a small group.

  • Discuss unfamiliar words and phrases by context.

Lesson 4:

Oliver's Silver Dollar
Part II

  • Continue reading Oliver's Silver Dollar.

  • Discuss unfamiliar words and phrases by context.

  • Begin Oliver SMART Venn while reading.

Lesson 5:

Oliver's Silver Dollar
Part III

  • Finish reading Oliver's Silver Dollar.

  • Finish Oliver SMART Venn and discuss.

  • Post-reading blog on what the story was really about.  Include the five W's--who, what, where, why and when--as a comment.  Refresh yourself on what you learned about the Rosebud Reservation.  Would Oliver’s situation be likely to occur today?  Why or why  not?  Again, include only your initials as identifying information.

  • Look through each other’s blog comments.  Do you agree with their perspectives?  Why or why not?  Comment on the blog.  Ask questions if you need clarification.
